今天看到一張海報，上面畫了個抽象的圖，由幾條粗細不同的曲線組成，主標題寫了Sonnet Signatures，海報下方寫了幾行字，副標題是Sonnet 12。

When I do count the clock that tells the time,
And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;
When I behold the violet past prime,
And sable curls all silver'd o'er with white;

When lofty trees I see barren of leaves,
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,
And summer's green all girded up in sheaves,
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard,

Then of thy beauty do I question make,
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake
And die as fast as they see others grow;

And nothing 'gainst Time's scythe can make defence

原來這是莎士比亞的第12首十四行詩，十四行詩有其押韻與結構，ABAB CDCD EFEF GG。這種格式由三個四行詩節 (quatrain) 和一個兩行詩句 (couplet) 組成。例如time及prime的押韻，這首詩訴說著時間以及青春的流逝，最後提到抵抗時間侵蝕的方法是延續後代，以讓美麗在下一代身上得以延續。

這首詩很有意思，現今少子化的年代中，有一部份的人選擇不生小孩，原因很多也因人而異，但這真的是一件可惜的事情，讓美麗在下一代得以延續是件多麼美好的事情，有如四季一直循環下去，週而復始。

sonnet 一詞源自義大利語的 sonetto，意思是小詩或小曲。追溯更早的語源，這個詞來自拉丁語的sonus，聲音的意思，這也與其音樂性和朗誦傳統密切相關。

「sonnet」的音標為 /ˈsɒnɪt/（英式發音）或 /ˈsɑːnɪt/（美式發音）。

• 在英式發音中，開頭的母音「o」發短音 /ɒ/，接近「喔」的音。
• 在美式發音中，開頭的母音「o」則是 /ɑː/，偏向「啊」的音。

無論是哪種發音，重音都在第一個音節。

義大利語中的「sonetto」的音標為 /soˈnet.to/。

• 「so」發 /so/，為單純的「so」音。
• 「net」發 /ˈnet/，其中 /e/ 接近英文的「eh」音。
• 最後的「to」發 /to/，清晰地讀出 /t/ 和 /o/。

在義大利語中，重音落在第二個音節「net」，所以是 /soˈnet.to/。
